Gemini Gems

Gemini Gems are custom, AI-powered assistants designed to handle your most repetitive teaching tasks. Think of them as "specialist" versions of Gemini that you can train to follow your specific pedagogical style, grading rubrics, or curriculum standards.

  • You don’t need to know how to code to build a Gem. You just need to be able to describe what you want.

    Open Gemini: Go to gemini.google.com

Find the Manager: On the left-hand sidebar, click Explore Gems or Gem Manager.

Start New: Click + New Gem.

The "Big Three": Give your Gem a Name (e.g., "5E Lesson Architect"), a Description, and Instructions.

Save & Test: Use the Preview pane on the right to test it. If it’s working well, hit Save.

  • To get the best results, use the P.A.R.T.S. framework when writing your Gem’s instructions:

Persona: Tell it who it is. "You are an expert 9th-grade Biology teacher with a focus on inquiry-based learning."

Audience: Who is the output for? "Write for students with a 4th-grade reading level" or "Write for a formal parent newsletter."

Rules: Set boundaries. "Never give the answer immediately; ask a guiding question first." or "Always use the 5E Instructional Model."

Task: What is its main job? "Generate three differentiated exit ticket questions based on the topic I provide."

Steps/Format: How should it look? "Present the output in a table with columns for 'Activity,' 'Duration,' and 'Materials'."

Pro Tip: Use the "Use Gemini to rewrite instructions" button (the pencil icon) to let the AI polish your rough draft into a professional prompt.

  • Knowledge Grounding: You can now upload PDFs, Syllabus files, or link a NotebookLM notebook. This ensures the Gem only uses your approved materials rather than general internet data.

Workspace Integration: If you have a Workspace Education account, you can access your Gems directly in Gmail or Google Docs sidebars to draft emails to parents or provide feedback on essays.

Sharing with Students: You can share a link to your Gem. Students can then use your "Socratic Tutor Gem" to get help with homework without you needing to be online 24/7.

  • Gem Name

    Primary Function

    The Rubric Generator

Paste an assignment description; it builds a 4-point rubric in a table format.

    The IEP Accommodator

Takes a standard lesson plan and suggests 3 ways to modify it for diverse learners.

    The Socratic Tutor

Guides students through a problem by asking questions instead of giving answers.

    The Parent Communicator

Drafts professional, empathetic emails based on brief notes about student behavior.

    The "Hook" Brainstormer

Generates 5 creative, high-energy ways to start a lesson on any topic.

  • It’s Hallucinating: If the Gem makes things up, update your instructions to include: "If you don't know the answer based on the provided files, say you don't know."

Too Wordy: Add a rule: "Keep all responses under 200 words and use bullet points."

Check the Age: In most school domains, students must be 13+ (or 18+ depending on admin settings) to interact with shared Gems. Refer to the SISD AUP for more information.
