Seguin ISD Provided Devices

A computer (e.g. Mac, PC, Chromebook or iPad) is needed for students in grades 6-12 in order for them to do their schoolwork. All of these students have the opportunity to check out a district-owned Chromebook at school and at home. Chromebooks and iPads are provided for elementary students to use in the classroom.
  • OWNERSHIP

Seguin ISD retains sole right of ownership of the Chromebooks. These devices are loaned to the students for educational purposes only for a one-year period, renewable each year.

    MONITORING USE

Students should be aware that there should be no expectation of privacy when using Seguin ISD network or equipment. When students access the Seguin ISD network at school, Seguin ISD will actively filter access and use third party solutions to monitor content for threats, violence, illegal activity, etc. Notifications are sent to the Seguin ISD Tech Support and Administration regarding suspicious activity. If concerns are identified, disciplinary action and/or parent contact may occur.

    CHARGING CHROMEBOOK AT HOME
It is recommended that students establish a location where they charge their Chromebook each night so it is ready for use the next day.  A Chromebook will last through an entire school day without problem on a full charge.  Some parents/guardians have chosen to have this in a location outside of the student's bedroom to assure it has been plugged in and removes the possibility of late night usage.

    LATE NIGHT USE
The district does not restrict use of the Chromebook to any specific time periods due to very different family, work and homework situations.  Some parents/guardians have chosen to have the device plugged in each night outside of the student's bedroom when concerned about late-night usage.

Digital Resources FAQ

Digital resources are district-wide software applications which include but are not limited to Google Apps for Education, Seesaw, and Classlink.
  • Digital Tools and Educational Resources

What digital tools and resources does Seguin ISD provide?

All students in Seguin ISD are provided access to various digital tools and educational resources to enhance their learning experience. This notice explains what these tools entail and the terms of use that parents/guardians are acknowledging.

    Services Provided to Students

Every student is assigned accounts that provide access to essential educational tools and services, including:

Productivity and collaboration tools (documents, spreadsheets, presentations)

    Email communication

    Cloud storage for files

    Digital classroom management systems

    Learning management systems

    Educational applications and curriculum resources

    Collaborative editing and sharing capabilities

With these tools, students can create, share, and collaborate on various assignments and projects from any internet-connected device.

    Student Account Management

The district creates and manages all student accounts, including the ability to access, reset passwords, monitor usage, and disable accounts as needed.

How do these digital tools align with Seguin ISD Responsible Use Policy?

Access to digital tools is a privilege. Seguin ISD's Responsible Use Policy governs proper student utilization of accounts and services. Account misuse can result in disciplinary consequences per the RUP.

All educational services used by Seguin ISD comply with student data privacy laws including FERPA, COPPA, and the Texas SCOPE Act (HB 18). These services do not scan user content or student data for commercial purposes.

Seguin ISD maintains full control and ownership over student accounts and all created content. The district can access, monitor, and supervise accounts at any time.

Texas SCOPE Act (HB 18) Compliance Statement

In accordance with the Texas Student Privacy in Online Curriculum and Educational (SCOPE) Act (HB 18), Seguin ISD provides this notification regarding digital tools and educational resources used in instruction.

The district maintains a current list of all online applications used for instruction, which is available upon request as required by the SCOPE Act.

    • To provide students with access to current technology applications and free tools designed for collaboration with other students and teachers
    • To give students the ability to work on their documents both in school and at home - anytime and anywhere from any Internet connected device
    • To help students work collaboratively, engage in peer-editing of documents, and publish for a wider audience within Seguin ISD
    • To facilitate “paperless” transfer of work between students and teachers
    • To provide adequate long-term storage space for student work
    • To actuate potential cost savings in terms of software licensing and document storage
  • The Google agreement with Seguin ISD provides access to Google applications and storage. While Google hosts these services off-site, the District maintains the ability to manage users, groups, and settings, much like other locally hosted systems. This means that Seguin ISD can grant and remove user access, and control other settings to ensure a safe and secure collaboration environment for students and teachers.
  • The terms of the Google contract with Seguin ISD mandates that we must have parental permission for the use of Google Apps for Education. During registration parents are asked to give consent for their student to use district approved digital resources, it states that "information about my child will be collected and stored electronically." Google does not request any personal information from students and the District does not provide personal student data (ex. birthdate, address, phone number, grades, test scores) to Google. That information resides in the Seguin ISD student information system and is not stored nor available to Google.
  • If you do not give permission for your child to be given digital resources, your child will not be able to use most outside digital resources available through Seguin ISD that require a student login. Your child will not have access to devices requiring a Seguin ISD login. This includes digital devices such as Chromebooks which are intended for students to check-out and take home.
  • Information about the Google Apps for Education security and privacy policy is available on the Google site.

Student Applications

Below is a list of tools to help students navigate online learning including, how to login for the first time, critical learning systems such as Seesaw and Google Classroom, and other approved apps useful in learning.
  • Students in our school district follow different login procedures based on their grade level. Secondary students (grades 6–12) receive their login credentials when they are issued a district device. These credentials allow access to the district website, learning platforms, and digital tools. In contrast, elementary students (grades PK–5) are provided with their login information directly by their classroom teachers. This ensures younger students receive guidance and support during the login process. If students experience login issues, they should contact their teacher or campus technology staff for assistance.

Application Review Process

Today’s classrooms increasingly employ on-demand delivery of personalized content, virtual forums for interacting with other students and teachers, and a wealth of technologies that help foster and enhance the learning process. We are committed to protecting the privacy of your student(s).
  • The District is committed to protecting our students’ and staffs’ privacy through maintaining strong privacy and security protections. The privacy and security of this information is a significant responsibility and we value the trust of our students, parents, and staff.

    REVIEWING NEW SOFTWARE/APPLICATIONS

Does it align with our current curriculum?

Does the District have other similar products already in use?

    Is it age appropriate?

How will it be used to further enhance instruction?

Is it available to all students?

What platform does it run on? iOS, Chromebook? Windows? Android?

How well does it integrate with other systems in place?

How do students login? (Clever, Google, Canvas, etc.)

What kind of data is collected?

Does it have access to Google Drive?

Will it be used by Staff only? Students only? Staff & Student use?

Is there a cost? If so, how will it be paid for?

    And many other considerations

    WHO DOES THE REVIEW?

The review team consists of staff from the Curriculum and Instruction Department and Technology Department.

  • WHAT IS IT?

Student data privacy covers the use, collection, handling and governance of students’ personally identifiable information (PII). This includes any and all information that can be used to identify, locate or contact an individual student—such as name, address, student ID, and login information. It also includes the student’s academic, health, and disciplinary records, as well as information that can be combined to identify a particular student, like demographics and birth date.

    WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Student data privacy is important because there are legal and ethical limitations on the collection, use, sharing, and handling of a student's personally identifiable information (PII). Federal and state laws regulate the privacy of student PII.

Meanwhile, data collection and the use of student information inside and outside our schools is rising all the time. Technology tools and apps are making it possible for educators and students to collaborate, create, and share ideas more easily than ever.

When schools use technology, students’ data—including some personal information—is collected both by educators and often the companies that provide apps and online services. Educators use some of this data to inform their instructional practice and get to know their students better. It is just as essential for educators to protect their students as it is to help them learn.

HOW ARE WE MAKING SURE ADOPTED TOOLS COMPLY WITH STUDENT DATA PRIVACY RULES?

Seguin ISD is a member of the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC). The SDPC is a collaborative of districts and marketplace providers working together to implement solutions to growing data privacy concerns.

As part of this consortium, we use a National Data Privacy Agreement and the goal is to have all of our vendors for all of our software used in the District, sign this agreement. The agreement covers what data is collected, how and where it is stored, and much more.

As new software and apps become available, we have a team of dedicated staff who review them in detail before we even ask the vendor to sign an agreement. Once the software has been reviewed and we have a data privacy agreement in place, it becomes available for use. You can find a list of all software/apps that have gone through this process on our Seguin ISD Digital Resources page.
