The Patlan Elementary School Archery team, currently ranked 15th in the state in their division, will compete in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament in Belton on March 28-29.
This year, a record high 3,107 students from 131 Texas schools participated in the Texas State Qualifying Tournament in January. Of those schools, approximately 88 percent of them made the minimum qualifying score, either as individuals or as a team, and will be shooting at the state tournament. The minimum qualifying score for the Elementary Division was 1,672 points out of a total of 3,000 possible points (30 arrows shot with a maximum score of 10 points per arrow). The top 12 Patlan Elementary archers combined for a total score of 2,397, which qualified the entire team to attend the state tournament.
Patlan fielded their first archery team in 2017-2018 and had two archers advance to the state tournament. Abren Ham and Eddie Barrera, now sixth graders at Barnes Middle School, made history last year as the first Seguin students to earn a spot in the state tournament.
“The entire Patlan community is extremely excited about our team of more than 20 archers competing in the state tournament in Belton. Our students are looking forward to representing Seguin at state,” said Patlan Campus Technologist and archery sponsor Kevin Engler.
Patlan Archery has five certified archery instructors on staff, including fourth grade English/Language Arts teacher Juan Hernandez, PE coaches Louise Kaina and Jennifer Autry and first grade teacher Brittany Travis, plus Engler.
“The Patlan Archery program has benefitted from amazing financial support locally and statewide,” said Principal Linda Guzman. She credits the generosity of Alligator Dental, Cornerstone Pediatrics, Trinity Oaks--Guadalupe River Camp, Lone Star Bowhunters Association, TexasBowhunter.com and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
“This is an amazing opportunity for our students to compete at the state level and it has been a true community effort to get them there. I thank all of our business sponsors and Patlan families for their support,” she said.
