Seguin ISD June 22 Special Board Meeting
06/23/2021

During a special meeting held June 22, the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a measure to raise Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez’s salary to $230,000 and extend his contract an additional two years.

Trustees released the following statement at the meeting:

We conducted a salary study and discovered that Dr. Gutierrez was in the lower range of area superintendents and superintendents in similar districts. Just as we want to retain and give competitive compensation to our teachers and other employees, we want to keep our exceptional superintendent and ensure that his pay is commensurate with the quality of his work.

We are listening to the community and our stakeholders spoke clearly when they expressed their appreciation that he chose to stay with the district.

The school district’s image has improved, and this has contributed to growth and the overall quality of life in our community.

The district’s bond projects are on schedule and within budget.

The district has refinanced bonds which has led to significant taxpayer savings.

We appreciate Dr. Gutierrez’s ongoing effort to grow leaders from within.

His decisions and planning are student focused.

The board and community are impressed with his leadership and guidance over the last school year, especially considering the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Safety protocols that were in place during the pandemic were instrumental in keeping our students and staff safe.

Remote learning was constantly reviewed and adjusted as conditions of the pandemic changed the course of public education in our community.

Transparency was prioritized by soliciting employee and community feedback through virtual Town Halls and Thoughtexchange surveys.

Dr. Gutierrez has never faltered while moving forward to improve curriculum during this challenging year. Additionally, he plans to implement new strategies designed to ensure the success of all students for the upcoming school year and beyond.
