Program extension to offer free meals to all Seguin ISD students
09/14/2020

The United States and Texas departments of agriculture (USDA and TDA) are offering additional flexibilities to Child Nutrition programs across the country in order to better serve communities.

USDA has extended the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to school districts through Dec. 31, 2020, or until USDA funds run out. By operating the SFSP instead of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Seguin ISD will be able to serve free breakfast and lunch to all students, including those at Seguin High School, as well as children in the community via curbside pickup, effective immediately. This means that all students can receive free meals whether they are eating on campus through face-to-face learning or learning remotely and picking up meals curbside.

Parents picking up curbside meals that do not have the child present in the car will need to show proof of enrollment in the district (not necessarily proof of being a remote learner) or a birth certificate if the child is not enrolled in the district. This is to help ensure the meals are being provided to children.

“If the student is in the car, we will ask if the student is enrolled in the district, and if so, ask for a student ID number or name so we can tie that meal back to the student through our system,” said Jacob Galvan, Seguin ISD director of child nutrition.

Curbside meal pickup locations are Seguin High School, Barnes and Briesemeister middle schools, plus Jefferson, Koennecke, McQueeney, Patlan, Rodriguez, Vogel and Weinert elementary schools. Lunch and breakfast are provided through curbside pickup from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays. Curbside breakfast is intended for the following school day.

When the temporary program ends on or before Dec. 31, 2020, Seguin ISD must resume the traditional NSLP that will provide meals to Seguin High School students based on their eligibility for Free and Reduced-Priced meals. Additionally, under the NSLP, the district will only be able to serve meals to enrolled Seguin ISD students.

Seguin ISD will share additional information regarding the end of the Summer Program as it is made available. For more information, please call the Seguin ISD Child Nutrition Department at 830-401-8618.
