Substitute teachers at the secondary level are desperately needed at Seguin ISD. As a result, the district has increased the daily rate for middle and high school substitutes by $20.
"We are experiencing a substitute teacher shortage unlike anything we have experienced in recent years, especially at the two middle schools," said Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez.
The additional $20 will increase the middle and high school substitute daily rate to $105 for those with a high school diploma, $110 for 60 or more college hours, $115 for degreed and $120 for certified teacher.
The district hopes the pay increase will recruit new substitutes and attract more to fill in at Barnes and Briesemeister middle schools.
Gutierrez said that the shortage is not unique to Seguin ISD.
"Many other school districts are experiencing the same challenges. When the economy is doing well, school districts tend to struggle to fill substitute positions," he said.
Interested substitutes willing to serve at the middle and high schools are encouraged to contact the Seguin ISD Human Resources Department at 830-401-8628.
