This fall, Seguin families have a unique opportunity to discover the joys of camping and Texas state parks.
Pete Silvius, Seguin ISD coordinator of P.E. and outdoor education, has teamed with Texas Outdoor Family and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) to host camping workshops being held throughout the state.
Silvius says that on Sept. 23-25, Seguin families can camp at Garner State Park, near Concan, at not cost with the Seguin ISD family group. An additional opportunity closer to home is being offered at Palmetto State Park on Oct. 21-23. The cost of the campsite, access to loaner camping gear such as tent and cots plus a host of fun filled, camping-related activities will be covered.
“This is a great chance for families to learn the basics of camping without having to purchase the most basic camping equipment,” he said.
The Texas Outdoor Family program will loan, lanterns, stoves and fuel, a coffee press, pots, fry pan and utensils in addition to the tent that sleeps six, two cots and four foam pads.
“At Seguin ISD we continue to increase outdoor recreational opportunities for our students, especially in the areas of kayaking and biking. We are supportive of TPWD and the Texas Outdoor Family program in this initiative and I hope that many of our families take advantage of this opportunity to camp for free,” he said.
At Garner State Park, families will camp at their own site with access to restrooms, hot showers and potable water. Palmetto State Park is approximately 30 minutes from Seguin.
Space is limited so interested families must commit prior to registering. To begin the registration process, please contact Silvius at (830) 372-5771 or psilvius@seguin.k12.tx.us.
