Two Seguin ISD DI teams advance to Globals
04/04/2016
Two Seguin ISD Destination ImagiNation (DI) teams have advanced to Global competition following their performance at State competition on April 2 near Dallas. This marks the eleventh year in a row that Seguin is represented at Globals, to be held May 25-28 in Knoxville, Tenn. DI is an educational program where student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. In working to solve the challenges, teams learn important life skills like time management, collaboration, conflict resolution and creative and critical thinking. More than 125,000 students compete in DI each year. Advancing to Globals is the Weinert Elementary School team of Brylynn Baker, Christian Brooks, Carter Dunn, Shelby Just, Ellie Kallus, Madison Kirchner (Koennecke Elementary student) and Ava Sauceda. The team also earned the highest score in the Central Challenge and Team Choice. Leah Bohnenberger, Serenity DeLeon, Jonah Reilly and Jaden Tovar of Seguin High School also advanced to compete against teams from around the world in Knoxville. The team tied for the second highest score in Central Challenge and received third highest score in Team Choice. The Briesemeister Middle School team of Jesy Barhight, Beckett Legore, Andy McDowall (Barnes Middle School student), Karen Ranft and Holly Stange missed qualifying for Globals by three points. However, these competitors earned the highest score in Instant Challenge. Earning the third highest score combined for Central Challenge and Team Choice was the Seguin High School team of Kayson De La Garza, Ashlee Hernandez, Jayce Holmes, Samantha Lum (Barnes Middle School student), Hailey Thornton (Barnes Middle School student) and Emilie Weber (Briesemeister Middle School student). “Once again Seguin ISD students have advanced to the pinnacle of competition and continue the tradition of having outstanding teams in the DI program,” said Michael Olstad, one of the district’s DI coordinators.
