Five first place Seguin ISD DI teams advance to State

On Feb. 27, 16 Destination ImagiNation (DI) teams from Seguin ISD competed in the regional tournament in Boerne. Five of these teams advanced to state competition in Anna, Texas on April 1-2. Overall, Seguin ISD teams finished with five first place finishes, three seconds, three thirds, one fourth and one fifth. Two teams and two individuals won the Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution and performance. One individual brought home the DaVinci Award for taking a unique approach to a solution, risk taking and outstanding creativity while a team earned the Spirit Award for modeling spirit, teamwork, sportsmanship and volunteerism. State qualifiers include the Seguin High School team of Serenity DeLeon, Jaden Tovar, Lea Bohnenberger and Jonah Reilly. Reilly also won a Renaissance Award. A second Seguin High School team of Hailey Thornton, Samantha Lum, Emilie Weber, Kayson De La Garza, Jayce Holmes and Ashlee Hernandez also advanced to state competition. The Briesemeister Middle School team of Gabriela Aguirre, Vanessa Castilla, Evalyn Cerna, Allen Morin, Casey Silvius and Peyton Silvius are state-bound and received a Spirit Award. Beckett Legore, Jesy Barhight, Andy McDowall, Karen Ranft and Holly Stange of Briesemeister also took first place honors and advanced to state. A team from Weinert Elementary School comprised of Brylynn Baker, Christian Brooks, Carter Dunn, Shelby Just, Ellie Kallus, Madison Kirchner and Ava Sauceda advanced to state and won a Renaissance Award. According to Michael Olstad, district DI coordinator, additional teams from Seguin High School, Barnes Middle School and Jefferson, Koennecke, McQueeney, Vogel and Weinert elementaries also competed in regionals. The Barnes team of Walker McDowall, Alan Dodson, Aidan Cantu, Diamond Ibarra, Addyson McDowall and Sawyer Riley received a Renaissance Award. John Walker Baker was awarded the Renaissance Award while Harley Thornton won a DaVinci Award. Both competed on a Weinert Elementary team. “All of our teams did a tremendous job representing their campus, Seguin ISD and the Seguin community and we appreciate the community’s support. We are all extremely excited about the state competition in D next month and look forward to bringing more honors home to Seguin,” Olstad said.
