Seguin Early College High School Alumnus Spotlight

Kaylie KoenenKaylie Koenen is currently attending Texas State University and studying toward a degree in Marketing. She has shared the following insight into her Early College High School (ECHS) experience at Seguin High School.

What type of impact did ECHS have on your current role as a college student?

As an ECHS student, I was able to gain unwavering confidence in myself and my abilities. College can be very challenging, overwhelming, and at times make you feel like you are in over your head. However, because I was able to persevere through the ECHS program, I am able to find comfort in knowing that I am capable of accomplishing my goals even if it is going to be challenging.

What was one of the most valuable lessons you learned as a Seguin ECHS student?

The most valuable lesson I learned as a Seguin ECHS student was that I had to first be put in a challenging situation before I could conquer it. There is no greater feeling than accomplishing something difficult, and the ECHS program allowed me to become comfortable with doing difficult things.

Describe an inspirational moment or person during your time as an ECHS student?

I was blessed to have many great mentors and teachers throughout my years. Ms. Schneebeli was one of them and had a very positive influence on my time at Seguin High School. She was passionate about psychology, sincerely cared about her students, and worked hard to establish a welcoming and engaging learning environment.

What advice do you have for current ECHS students?

I am so happy that you are putting forth the time and effort to invest in your future! I hope you understand that you are a part of the very select few who chose to take advantage of this opportunity, and are so proud of yourself for forgoing easy. However, I hope that you do not get complacent in this excellence. My advice is to always stay hungry for more: more opportunities, more improvement, more challenges, and more accomplishments. You can do it!

If you could give current 8th graders insight to the benefits of being an ECHS student, what would you say?

I know that in eighth grade college can seem so far away, but it is not. By choosing to participate in the ECHS program, you are going to change your life in ways you can’t even imagine right now. You are going to constantly be put into situations and around people that are going to help you develop academically and personally beyond the typical high school experience. You will develop a work ethic and establish confidence in yourself that will last far after you graduate, all while growing an indescribable bond with your fellow ECHS students.

I can not encourage you enough to sign up for this extremely rare opportunity. Even if you plan on doing several other extra-curricular activities in high school, you can do it! Even if you don’t consider yourself to “fit the mold” of an ECHS student, you can do it! Even if you are worried that it will be too hard, you can do it!

What is your long term goal after you finish your degree?

After graduating with my Bachelor's degree, I plan on attaining a MBA in Marketing.
