What is Adult Education & Literacy?

The Education Service Center, Region 20’s Adult Education & Literacy Program helps adult learners build a strong foundation of academic skills so that they may fulfill their role as a worker, parent and citizen/community member. Our instructors, instructional aides and supervisors have made a commitment to provide adult learners with the tools to achieve their goals and open a world of opportunities for success in their life. Adult Education and Literacy consists of four different courses which include:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • English Literacy and Civics (EL Civics)
  • Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education (ABE/ASE)
  • Free Career and College Planning Services

Each year thousands of students enroll in our classes FREE of charge. We offer various daytime, afternoon and evening class schedules throughout the the San Antonio area.

Our service area includes seven counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar (excluding Northside ISD, North East ISD, and San Antonio ISD), Gillespie, Karnes, Kerr and Wilson.

AEL Team Purpose Statement

We serve adult learners by supporting, encouraging, and empowering them with knowledge to help them achieve an enriched quality of life.
