Board SpotlightSeguin ISD will be spotlighting our seven Board of Trustees during Texas School Board Recognition Month. We have asked our trustees to answer the following questions and their responses follow.
Cinde Thomas-Jimenez, President (District 3)

How do Seguin ISD students inspire you?
find it inspirational that SISD students are excited about learning. When I visit campuses, I see actively engaged students that exhibit contagious enthusiasm. I always leave the campuses with an uplifted spirit.

What motivates you to serve as a Seguin ISD board member?
My motivation comes from many years of involvement in Seguin ISD -- I have seen the potential of the district through the many roles that I have served. I worked as a teacher for 10 years, and then came back to the district as a parent and volunteer. I would like to see SISD become one of the premier districts in central Texas - a destination district.

What are some highlights you've experienced serving on the board of trustees?
I believe that bringing in new leadership will result in many progressive and innovative changes. Many of these changes will be reflected in the Strategic Plan, which is currently under development and includes input from all factions of the district --teachers, students, parents, administrators and community members. There is an atmosphere of positive enthusiasm throughout the district and community that I haven't seen for many years.

Barbara Effenberger (District 5)

How do Seguin ISD students inspire you?
The students and their teachers are awesome. I have visited numerous classrooms and as a retired teacher I have been pleased with that I have observed. I encourage all parents and student caretakers to visit and even volunteer in their schools. The student have embraced the new technologies and are steadily advancing.

What motivates you to serve as a Seguin ISD board member?
I have been a lifelong advocate of public education and have received strong support from community members in my district.

What are some highlights you've experienced serving on the board of trustees?
The dedication of the newly built high school facilities would be at the top of the list. I have served under three superintendents--each very talented and unique in their leadership styles and providing for the success of student learning in their hearts. I have enjoyed working with an amazing staff who are truly committed to supporting the vision and goals we've set to achieve for the children of Seguin ISD. The role of a school board member is not simple--it is complex and diverse encompassing the skills and experiences of each member. It is a team effort that produces a successful outcome. It has been challenging and sometimes painful. But, our district is in good financial shape and continues to be successful in providing the students with an education of which they can be proud.

Benito Amador, Jr. Secretary (District 6)

How do Seguin ISD students inspire you?
Seeing the students absorb knowledge provided to them. Seeing student be more than what is expected of them. Seeing students excel at their work. The students make me fee that the world will be "ON" when they take charge. Their optimism!

What motivates you to serve as a Seguin ISD board member?
The students. I want them to have all the opportunities they need for a better life which starts with a great education. I hope that at least one of our students become a great success that will speak well for his family, the school and the city where he/she lived. All of the trustees are working towards that end result.

What are some highlights you've experienced serving on the board of trustees?
Listening to elementary school students sing the National Anthem during a board meeting. Touring the schools and seeing the condition they are in. My hope is to see lots of parents at the board meeting.

Overwhelmed!
In my first year as a trustee, I am overwhelmed with information and issues. I will work hard and I will persevere.
